Hazel “Marie” Wright

Marie Wright, 83, died Wednesday, February 5, 2014. She was born August 16, 1930, in Topeka, the daughter of William “Paul” and Hazel Fern (Layman) Rogers.

She attended North Highland Grade School and graduated from Hoyt High School in 1948. She was a secretary at Quality Oil for 15 years.

She was active in the Elmont United Methodist Church and Chiropractic Auxiliary. For 41 years she was active in the Elmont Opry, among many things she was best known as “Ninny Squirrel.”

Marie was married to Dr. Rex A.Wright, D.C., on August 6, 1965, in Miami, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on May 31, 1998. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Mitchel L. Hirsch, on August 15, 1993; her parents; and brothers: Robert D. Rogers, Marvin G. Rogers, and William Charles “Billy” Rogers; and a sister: Betty Fern Warren.

Surviving are a daughter: Shannon Kay Akins (Darrin); a brother: Donald P. Rogers (Pat); sisters-in-law: Eileen Rogers, Martha Rogers; a brother-in-law: Jack Warren; and grandchildren: Christa Marie Hirsch, Caegan Carre Hirsch, and Kaija Noelle Akins.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at Elmont United Methodist Church. Interment in Half-Day Cemetery, Elmont.

Marie will lie in state from 3:00 to 8:30 PM, Sunday, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
